Story Reader

SHould I put part of my story at the begining of my story to hook the reader?
should i add the middle of my story, ending, a quote, or something interesting to the begining of my story to get the reader hooked. maybe the climax? if so, what would be best, because i think it kinda corny starting a story off with someone just waking up.
*thanks
yeh but not too much just something interesting without giving away the ending. for example if some one is stabbed to death at the end you could put the bit just before that at the start, like someone standing over them with a knife so its exciting but the reader has no idea if the person lives or dies, or even if they actually got stabbed or not. then you get a interesting start but the end will be interesting too

Horizons K Reader 2 $11.95 “The Horizons Kindergarten Phonics Readers are to be used as a companion to the Horizons Kindergarten Phonics Student Workbooks. For each lesson in the Student Workbooks there is a corresponding story in the readers. The story will illustrate and demonstrate the primary concept of the lesson. Most kindergarten students should not be expected to read these stories independently. The stories include a mixture of simple short-vowel words and more complex multi-syllable or long-vowel words. The teacher or parent should read the stories to the student, pausing where appropriate to allow the student to sound out and read the words they have covered in the lessons. As the student’s vocabulary increases, the teacher or parent is encouraged to repeat the reader stories in a cyclic fashion. For Example; on the day “x” is covered (Lesson 26) both the “x” story and the “shorta” story (Lesson 1) can be read.” |

The Lace Reader $4.49 Drawn by family. Driven by fear. Haunted by fate. Would knowing the future be a gift or a burden? Or even a curse? The Whitney women of Salem, Massachusetts are renowned for reading the future in the patterns of lace. But the future doesn"t always bring good news – as Towner Whitney knows all too well. When she was just fifteen her gift sent her whole world crashing to pieces. She predicted – and then witnessed – something so horrific that she vowed never to read lace again, and fled her home and family for good. Salem is a place of ghosts for Towner, and she swore she would never return. Yet family is a powerful tie and fifteen years later, Towner finds herself back in Salem. Her beloved great-aunt Eva has suddenly disappeared – and when you"ve lived a life like Eva"s, that could mean real trouble. But Salem is wreathed in sickly shadows and whispered half-memories. It"s fast becoming clear that the ghosts of Towner"s fractured past have not been brought fully into the light. And with them comes the threat of terrifying new disaster. A literary page-turner with depth, narrative power and a story that novels like "The Thirteenth Tale" can only dream of, "The Lace Reader" is a bewitching and tightly plotted read. |

An American Story $9.29 A profoundly courageous and insightful memoir, An American Story documents the events that have shaped journalist Debra Dickerson’s conscience. The daughter of former sharecroppers, Dickerson never imagined she would emerge from her squalid St. Louis neighborhood to become an acclaimed journalist with a Harvard Law degree. A constant reader and a straight-A student, nevertheless Dickerson’s lack of confidence kept her from accepting the many colleges offers she received. Instead she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, quickly rising through the ranks. In spite of her success, she recognized within herself deep-seated conflict at being a working class black woman living in a white man’s world. Her path to self-acceptance is at the heart of this refreshing narrative. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

A Hebrew Reader for Ruth $17 “Anyone who has taught Classical Hebrew knows the importance and the difficulty of helping students make the transition from completing exercises in an introductory grammar to reading the biblical text on their own. Training students to use the reference grammars so that their learning of Hebrew can continue independently is particularly difficult. It is with this in mind that Hebrew Reader for Ruth was created.Hebrew Reader for Ruth presents the complete Hebrew text of the book of Ruth, a verse-by-verse translation, and an analysis of every word, including morphology, meaning, and syntax. Further, utilizing all of the standard reference grammars, Vance references every discussion of Ruth found in them, usually including the discussion itself in quotation or in summary. The book of Ruth makes an excellent first text for students of Classical Hebrew, with its interesting story and standard grammar (including a number of feminine verb forms), and Hebrew Reader for Ruth is intended for classroom and personal study. Worksheets are also available to facilitate and reinforce learning by providing space for students to parse each form and translate each verse.” |

The Next Story $19.99 “>>>>>The Next Story>>: Life and Faith after the Digital Explosion>>> >>Even the least technical among us are being pressed from all sides by advances in digital technology. We rely upon computers, cell phones, and the Internet for communication, commerce, and entertainment. The Story Of The Mind $1.79 pubOne.info present you this wonderfully illustrated edition. In this little book I have endeavoured to maintain the simplicity which is the ideal of this series. It is more difficult, however, to be simple in a topic which, even in its illustrations, demands of the reader more or less facility in the exploration of his own mind. I am persuaded that the attempt to make the matter of psychology more elementary than is here done, would only result in making it untrue and so in defeating its own object. |

A Story Is Told $9.99 “Readers of the popular devotional booklet “Our Daily Bread “recognize the strength of the stories that illustrate the biblical truths each writer presents. Now all readers can have access to hundreds of these stories, arranged topically, for their own study, reference, or enjoyment. A wide range of categories, such as anger, Christian life, church and worship, creation, family, God’s guidance, prayer, and even humor help the reader pinpoint areas of interest and exploration. This high-interest, easy-to-use book works for reference, for study, or just for reading some good and inspiring stories.” |

Story Time $6.29 George and Kate are promised the finest education when they transfer to the Whittaker Magnet School. It boasts the highest test scores in the nation. But at what price? Their school’s curriculum is focused on beating standardized tests; classes are held in dreary windowless rooms; and students are force-fed noxious protein shakes to improve their test performance. Worst of all there seems to be a demon loose in the building–one whose murderous work has only just begun. A bitterly funny satire about the state of modern education from the author of Tangerine and Crusader. Includes a reader’s guide and an author’s note. |

Story Of The Christian Church $14.99 “No institution has spanned more centuries and more continents than the Christian church. Its dramatic story is one of bloodshed and peace, corruption and purity. Here Dr. Hurlbut retells this story in an objective, concise, and clear style, emphasizing the spirit of the church, its growth and maturation, and the causes leading to historic events and their resulting influence. Accurate, up-to-date, and vividly presented, Hurlbut’s Story of the Christian Church traces the six general periods of church history from A.D. 30 to the present day. A concluding section, covering the period since Dr. Hurlbut’s death, has been added in this revised edition, thus giving the reader a complete, easily understood overview of the Christian church. Designed for two audiences, this book contains outlines and references in the margins to aid the student or teacher along with a continuous narrative and numerous illustrations for the general reader. It is ideal for Sunday school use, since it includes suggested outlines and review questions for each chapter at the end of the book.” |

Fatherless Generation: Redeeming The Story $10.19 The story of fatherlessness is being written into the heart of this generation. It can be heard in our songs seen in our movies read in our blogs. It is a story of grief pain and loss. A story of shame loneliness and rejection. A story of missed potential and wasted opportunity. A story that desperately needs to be heard. But fatherlessness is more than a personal tragedy. It is a growing epidemic affecting more than the single life of an individual. Fatherless youth are the driving force behind our society’s biggest problems such as: gangs teenage pregnancy drug abuse and suicide. And all too often the fatherless are either marginalized or ignored. How should we respond? How do we meaningfully engage the growing story of fatherlessness? How can the faith community enter into and begin rewriting this tragic story? It is in relationship that this generation has been wounded the most deeply; therefore it is in relationship where the healing must begin. Intentional intergenerational mentoring is the secret and foundational ingredient behind this new story of hope. Mentoring is also the most strategic way to reconcile the fatherless generation with God. As we make ourselves sacrificially available to this generation we will begin to see a new wave of transformation—hope born in the story of changed destinies and lives. John Sowers President of The Mentoring Project writes a personal and compelling description of the fatherless generation—a description that calls the reader to compassionate action. |

Sex book – Carrie’s Story $12.99 Considered a new classic among the pantheon of erotic literature, “Carrie’s Story” is an SM novel that transcends the mere graphic and titillating aspect of the genre, and forges a brutally honest and captivating experience that keeps the reader connected to the story as well as the characters. Carrie’s tale of “uncompromising sexual adventure” is set in the west coast areas of San Francisco and the Napa valley, where the ingnue (and the reader) are taken on a “sexually explicit journey” into the world of slave auctions, training regimes, and even human ponies. The story is flawlessly written, being intelligent and light-hearted, as well as “humorous and harrowing,” serving as an outstanding exploration of mastery and submission within the BDSM subculture that’s told from the point of view of the submissive. This particular literary device affords the reader substantial insight into the mind of such an individual; someone willing to leave themselves to the mercy of another, be it pain or pleasure. With a voice that is wry and cynical, it is this critical self-awareness that provides the answering motivation for subordination and the absolution from decision that results in Carrie’s ultimate sexual opulence. |

Pimp: The Story of My Life $16.99 As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Slim’s life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. This is the heyday of the pimp, the hard-won pride and glory, small though it may be; the beginnings of pimp before it was dragged in front of the camera, before pimp juice and pimp style. A trip through hell by one man who lived to tell the tale. The dangers of jail, addiction and death that are still all too familiar for today’s black community. Though it is a tale of his times, it will remain current and true for as long as there is a race bias, as long as there is a street life, as long as there is exploitation. |

They Have Killed Papa Dead!: The Road to Ford’s Theater, Abraham Lincoln’s Murder, and the Rage for Vengeance $8.44 The assassination of Abraham Lincoln is a central drama of the American experience. Its impact is felt to this day, and the basic story is known to all. Anthony Pitch’s thrilling account of the Lincoln conspiracy and its aftermath transcends the mere facts of that awful night during which dashing actor John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in the head and would-be assassin Lewis Payne butchered Secretary of State William Seward in the bed of his own home. “They Have Killed Papa Dead!” transports the reader to one of the most breathtaking moments in history, and reveals much that is new about the stories, passions, and times of those who shaped this great tragedy.Virtually every word of Anthony Pitch’s account is based on primary source material: new quotes from previously unpublished diaries, letters and journals – authentic contemporary voices writing with freshness and clarity as eyewitnesses or intimate participants – new images, a new vision and understanding of one of America’s defining moments. With an unwavering fidelity to historical accuracy, Pitch provides new confirmation of threats against the president-elect’s life as he traveled to Washington by train for his first inauguration, and a vivid personal account of John Wilkes Booth being physically restrained from approaching Lincoln at his second inauguration. Perhaps most chillingly, new details come to light about conditions in the special prison where the civilian conspirators accused of participating in the Lincoln assassination endured tortuous conditions in extreme isolation and deprivation, hooded and shackled, before and even during their military trial. Pitch masterfully synthesizes the findings of his prodigious research into a tight, gripping narrative that adds important new insights to our national story. |

”By the noble daring of her sons”: The Florida Brigade of the Army of Tennessee. $49.99 Between 1861 and 1862, Floridians flocked to join the six regiments that eventually constituted the Florida Brigade of the West. As the fragile remains of the 1st and 3rd Florida’s Battle Flag attests, portions of the brigade saw action in every major campaign of the Western Theater, save Iuka and Corinth. Until November 1863, the 1 st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th Infantry Regiments and the dismounted 1st Cavalry Regiment, served in separate brigades in different areas of the west. While the 1 st, 3rd, and 4th soldiered with the Army of Tennessee in major campaigns, the others protected the important Virginia-Tennessee railine against East Tennessee Unionists.;Following the Florida Brigade’s organization in November 1863, it became the epitome of the hardluck Army of Tennessee. Below strength, poorly armed, and shoddily equipped, the soldiers of the brigade followed their commanders through some of the hardest fighting of the war. From Missionary Ridge to Nashville, attrition whittled away at the small units. While many fell in battle, wounds incapacitated others, and still more wasted away in Northern prison camps. At the time of the surrender at Bennett Place, just over four hundred veterans remained with the brigade.;Through “By The Noble Daring Of Her Sons,” the story of these regiments, from their inceptions to their surrenders, will be told. While this dissertation seeks to describe the Florida Brigade’s military campaign, that is not its sole purpose. Rather, “By The Noble Daring Of Her Sons” uses the context of the Florida Brigade to allow the reader to experience various aspects of the war, including important but little-known facets. Furthermore, this dissertation proposes that Florida, before the war was a fractured state, with citizens maintaining regional allegiances. The overarching theme of this study is to establish that the Floridians’ service during the Civil War helped to create a state identity. |

”The Lord of the Rings” and the emerging generation: A study of the message and medium. J. R. R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson. $49.99 Throughout the ages, the communication of Christian truth has been the domain of preachers and poets, musicians and theologians, authors and dramatists, each seeking means by which to engage others in the truth that has captivated and transformed their lives. From direct proposition to allegorical representation, such effective communicators as Dwight L. Moody and C. S. Lewis have confronted their culture with Christian truth in response to Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples”. J. R. R. Tolkien employed myth as his vehicle of expression, creating The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) with no overt religious symbol or act, yet weaving his Roman Catholic Christian worldview into the very fabric of his characters and their journeys. Tolkien described his work as a “fundamentally religious and Catholic work, unconsciously at first, but consciously in the revision, with religious element absorbed into the story.”1 He discovered that myth allows the reader opportunity to explore the realities of life within the safety of an imagined world and its relationship.;Tolkien’s fantasy of Middle Earth and her people has captured the heart and mind of generations since its publication in 1954, offering glimpses into the truth that defined Tolkien’s life and worldview. This 20th century work found new expression and an even broader audience in Peter Jackson’s 21st century cinematic interpretation LOTR. Together, Tolkien’s myth and Jackson’s cinematic portrayal of that myth have successfully captured the attention of the Emerging generation. A study of both narrative and cinematic mediums along with the clarity of the message conveyed will allow an opportunity to consider the larger question of what medium and what message impacts the emerging post-modern generation. This dissertation will explore the effectiveness of Tolkien’s myth and Jackson’s cinematic interpretation of that myth in communicating truth, seeking insights into effective means of the communication of Christian truth |

‘to Sleep, Perchance. Apos: The Autobiograp $17.8 ‘To Sleep… Perchance …’ is the story of one’s man’s battle against an incurable and life-wrecking complaint – Narcolepsy. This is a retrospective journey through the better part of half a century, tracing the many career changes, sackings, resignations, heartaches and disappointments that have been the hallmark of this debilitating disorder. From falling asleep whilst in command of armoured fighting vehicles in the sixties, ‘nodding off’ on horseback, ’snoozing’ on parade before royalty; to ’snoring’ at management meetings, walking ‘zombie-like’ into oncoming stacker-trucks, falling face-down into steaming dishes in restaurants, and ‘turning to jelly’ on experiencing emotions such as joy or sorrow have been just some of the embarrassing incidents that have punctuated the author’s life.At times comic, at times tragically sad, ‘To Sleep Perchance’ follows the author’s struggle to survive, and maintain his very sanity in the face of ignorance and indifference, not merely amongst one’s colleagues, family, and friends – but even amongst the medical profession itself. As the reader is taken through the many role changes in his life, from soldier to salesman, clerical assistance to assistant cleric; controller of production to prisoner of corruption, director’s table to prisoner’s fable, and finally from strange buddies to academic studies, we gain an insight of what it is like to be a captive of this twilight world. |

…keeping Clarke. One son. One day. One mom’s personal journey through grief. $9.99 The death of a child is every parent’s worst nightmare; the one occurrence we pray will never happen. Written by Stephanie Benbenek whose only child, Clarke, was killed suddenly in an automobile accident, this memoir is as heartbreaking as it is uplifting. …keeping Clarke. is an unflinching and deeply personal story of living, dying and honoring loved ones lost. We weep with the author as we read of the moment she learns of her son’s death…and life is changed forever. These changes and how she survives under this unbearable weight are told in a voice that is compelling, honest and relevant.Unlike books that offer suggestions on how to move on from grief, this book lets the reader truly experience the journey of healing and provides a unique insight into the lifelong relationship with grief. In a very real sense, this story gives permission to grieve freely and to live a life that, while never again the same, can continue to have meaning and purpose. What begins as a loving narrative evolves into a poignant and thoughtful reminder for everyone: never underestimate the power of the human spirit or the impact of an individual life. This story is more than a book; it is a metaphor for learning to live beyond the pain. |

100 Americans Making Constitutional History: A Biographical History $280.65 100 Americans Making Constitutional History: A Biographical History presents 100 profiles of the key people behind some of the most important U.S. Supreme Court cases. Edited by Melvin I. Urofsky, a respected constitutional historian, each 2,000-word profile delves into the social and political content behind landmark Court decisions. For example, while a case like Brown v. Board of Education is about an important idea–the equal protection of the law–at its heart it is the story of a little girl, Linda Brown, who wanted to go to a decent school near her home. The outcome is accessible and objective stories about the individuals–heroes and scoundrels–who fought their way to constitutional history. 100 American Making Constitutional History helps students understand the human side of the Supreme Court’s decisions from the early republic to the present. Each biographical profile, written by a constitutional scholar or legal analyst, includes a discussion about the Court decision and how the specific legal issues evolved into great constitutional questions and drama. It puts a face and history to major cases by reminding the reader that there are people behind them, seeking vindication of their individual liberties and civil rights. |

14 Days China $15.49 The blending of a Who Done It, and of a travelogue from Beijing to Shanghai, makes for both exciting and eye opening reading. Thirteen American tourists and their Chinese tour guide expose all their intimate pasts, as they experience present day China. With support of the tour guide and abetted by the self-declared class clown, the group becomes lifelike, in a small world of their own. Through the eyes of the author, the reader sees China with its lengthy artistic history, economic freedoms, Communistic political policies, and thriving happy children. The tour visits Beijing, Xian, Chongqing, Fengdu, Jingzhou, and Wuhan; it includes a lengthy Yangzi River cruise and is to end in Shanghai. The story, 14 Days China, takes us from the ending of the trip in Shanghai back to the beginning of the tour and finally after thirteen days of togetherness and sightseeing, to a surprising ending. The narrative starts when Chinese officials discover a stolen Chinese icon from the Western Han Dynasty, hidden in the Americans’ joint luggage. Who stole it from a China National Museum? How could this happen? How can this be resolved? As the reader gets to know the characters, he or she will suspect various possible complicities in the crime. The mystery is solved and ends when all the jigsaw pieces interlock on the fourteenth day. |
